Sailing action view from on board a Clipper 68′ yacht racing hard to windward. I called it the ‘usual view’ because we had days and sometimes weeks at a time of living and racing on this 30 degree angle. It’s what the yachts are designed for, but it makes life on board quite hard work. You have to plan every move, and keep three points of contact at all times, otherwise you risk being thrown about and injured.
Colours are the dun decks, cream headsail just visible and the white-topped, deep blue ocean waves. The grey light is reflected off the secured spinnaker pole and the wet, angled deck. Painted in my studio from photos taken by me mid-ocean and from memories of those endless days beating to windward across oceans.
